Big remodeling job. Dining/music in what was basically the basement. Kitchen on main floor. Apartment(s) above. Among other oddities, it had a dumbwaiter carrying food down from the kitchen. Always kind of dark and damp. I think it didn't last too long.Bill Stonehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10865994745806323359noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3419060323134295102.post-15273204019711989002014-02-27T15:23:12.407-05:002014-02-27T15:23:12.407-05:00i worked there for about 3 weeks when i was a soph...i worked there for about 3 weeks when i was a sophomore, as a cook, had never cooked before in my life. it was located close to Harding Ave where i later lived in 74-75 with a couple fraternity brothers. We were all students there and played the frats and clubs and also at nearby schools (UVa, Longwood, Hampden-Sydney, Roanoke College, etc.)...played the Marriott too! Played at 117 South Main a lot also; knew Bullwinkle and Mike there.
Pretty teeny but a cool place and yeah you had to watch the water with the power cords and mic cables all over the place!
I don't recall it being around too long though...Bobbyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12749514286180133075noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3419060323134295102.post-83873285033835852272013-01-27T09:22:17.706-05:002013-01-27T09:22:17.706-05:00The Alamo WAS across the street from the Fire Stat...The Alamo WAS across the street from the Fire Station on Progress St. The entrance was around back and could be accessed from Main St by going between The Greek's Restaurant and Argabright's. Walk through the parking lot right to the back of the building. It too, like Middle Earth was always damp. There was a creek that ran beside the fire station and the water seeped through the floor. The old cash register had the metal clips that held the bills down, and if you were not careful, you could get quite a shock. Each day, we had to check to make sure the electrical cords were not hanging down in any water. I believe three local businessmen originally opened the Alamo. I recall two of the names as being George C. and Mike I.?Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18174301311600879790noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3419060323134295102.post-15777646713466357962012-07-16T00:59:23.750-04:002012-07-16T00:59:23.750-04:00Pudland was awesome .... can you get me some old p...Pudland was awesome .... can you get me some old photos and interesting factoids about them so I can do a special feature?Dennishttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17891247963294265269noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3419060323134295102.post-63832299252823588202012-06-24T01:54:10.251-04:002012-06-24T01:54:10.251-04:00I think the Alamo was across from the fire station...I think the Alamo was across from the fire station ( like the poster said ) but down Progress St just before you get to Harding St. I remember going there to see Pudland Jam Band play one night.I knew those guys ,at one time 2 of them were my roomates at "The Creek" which was down Glade Rd. then right at Nutter's Store the about 3rd or 4th house on the left Some worked at and all hung out at 117 South Main in about '73-'75.visionseeker2uhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17194546797513486989noreply@blogger.com
