Nothing new to say except a nice guy just wrote to me today to say how much he loved the sub sandwiches at Mr. Fooz. It's amazing how many times I've heard people say over the years that the Fooz subs were the best they ever had. Little did they know that wasn't actually oregano we used to sprinkle on top :)
That explains a lot.
ReplyDeleteWhat was that sub shop in Mish Mish alley where you stepped over a running creek and bought your sub through a dutch door?
ReplyDeleteT-shirts!

guitarch- you thinking of The Sewer ??
ReplyDeleteSounds like The Sewer to me, derived the name from the stream of water that ran accros the floor. . I worked there on Friday & Saturday nights b/4 I moved to Blacksburg in '72 or '73. Only choices were Italian or American subs as I remember. Stayed open to about 2-3am.
DeleteWhat is the address of this place? I love all your old pictures of Blacksburg!
ReplyDeleteI remember Dave's Dogs across the street from Fooz. Best pool room fights I ever saw. Dave Munday used to own it, same guy that owned, or used to own the tubing place down at the river. Anyone heard of Dave lately?
ReplyDeleteProfessor - see the post on Dave's here in November 2011
ReplyDeleteMr. Fooz was awesome. I was at Tech from 1978-82 and my roomies & I went there a lot. Pitchers of PBR were $2.65 and there was a new Bank of America ATM right across the street: a dangerous combination! Great subs, pinball & video games. My pal Tom Demuth was a foozball whiz. Good times, great memories. "Top of the Stairs" was down the street, and is the only place I ever saw Michelob dark. Good stuff.
ReplyDeleteHam and cheese sub was perfect! Draft PBR sucked.
ReplyDeletePBR pictures were $1 on Wednesday nights. I knew many people who arranged their classes so they didn't have any morning classes on Thursdays since they would be hungover.
ReplyDeleteThe men's room went like this.
First the folks would use the single toilet and single urinal.
As the night went on the sink was pressed into urinal service followed by the trashcan.
Eventually the back door was propped open and the alley became a urinal.
It was less than 2 blocks from the police station and I never saw anyone get busted for peeing outside.
Pitchers
ReplyDeleteDarn auto correct
Awesome bar. Wednesday night was always a party. Was tragic when it closed. Have many great memories from going to Virginia Tech and Mr. Fooz
