Gables Shopping Center revisited

A nice picture here of the old Gables Shopping center in the 1970's..  It's hard to make out in this photo but I think at the far left end was Mick-or-Mack and then the Sears catalogue store (with some merchandise in the store).  Leggett was the center anchor store and near the far right (not in the photo) was High's Ice Cream .... went there a lot in the summertime.

  1. A Bonanza steakhouse was later added, in the same general area as where the photographer would be in the picture.

  2. You're right, but I don't remember exactly when that happened. Maybe in the early 80's?

    1. It was there in 1976 because that is where my parents met my future (and still) wife. I enjoy your blog, brings back many old memories. I was there from 1971 to 1976... spent a lot of time at Ironman's (Carlye's) and 117. I still have the poster for the Poco concert and the Loggins and Mesina/ Doobie Bothers concert. Also features Jim Croce who did not come due to some reason I've long forgotten!

  4. This almost brought a tear to my eye to see this again - I was a child (born in 65) in Blacksburg then - I made many treks along here when my mother had her hair done across the street.... many memories for me of this shopping center as a child... thank you for posting this!!!

  7. Leggett was a very nice store, with reasonable prices and decent clothing. Its name was changed to Belk eventually. I remember the name TG&Y but forgot what they sold. I think there also was a tire store there.

  8. TG&Y was a 5 & 10¢ store like Rose's. My mother worked in the sewing Dept.
